Michelangelo was very skilled in the various art forms, however, he preferred to work with stone. This may be due to his early infatuation with stone, where he would spend most of his days with the stone cutter. Although, when he was an experienced artist, he would state that he could sense his subjects were trapped within the stone and that he would release them. This gave his stone work a very unique style to it and gave rise to his preference of working materials. Michelangelo had also spent a very lengthy time working on one of his most famed pieces, David, which may have very well given him the confidence/enthusiasm to continue working with stone.
